Unfortunately Yours | By Tessa Bailey
Book Review | Contemporary Romance
My thoughts
Narrative and Plot
Tessa Bailey knows how to nail it every single time. She knows what her readers want and delivers exactly that. Unfortunately Yours is yet another adorable and steamy romance that fits the brand.
Told from both the main characters’ perspectives, this is both hate-to-love and marriage-of-convenience romance trope. Something you inherently know will be a lot of fun to read. It delivers on that with plenty of banter and pranks. The plot moves smoothly and even if you know exactly how it is going to end; you are here for it.
Characters and Conflicts
For a contemporary romance, the plot is merely an outline. What you go in for are the characters. August and Natalie might have already caught your interest if you have read Secretly Yours.
Their meet-cute is already established and now you can easily start with the fun part where they enter into a fake marriage. Around the halfway point, I actually thought that this one dialed down the steam a bit. But boy, was I wrong?
While so many sex scenes might seem forced in any other romance novel, Tessa Bailey weaves a story with each scene. And it just fits snugly along with the character development and the overall plot. Also, you get some toe-curling steam on the side. Why would any romance reader complain about that?
However, the conflict here was quite evident, and you knew how it was going to play out. I didn’t get any kind of surprise in that department. Maybe it’s the oversaturation of the romance novels that I have been reading for a decade, but even as the final conflict came and went, I didn’t feel the urgency on behalf of these characters. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I was sure it could be resolved pretty quickly.
Conclusion
If you are picking up Unfortunately Yours, thinking you will get a fun, steamy rom-com and you can escape life for a few hours, you are absolutely right. And the epilogue will just make your heart fill with joy. Exactly the kind of feel-good vibe, you want to walk away with.
