Bookbugworld’s July Wrap Up | 2023

Dear Bookbugs,

July was a good month in terms of reading. I managed to read five books and started a sixth one which is above my monthly average. Although, I didn’t blog as much as I wanted to. Hopefully, that will change in August.

Without any more delay, let’s take a quick look at all the books I read in July.

1) The Hunting Wives by May Cobb

This was a rather frustrating read for the first half at least. Nothing happens, except for the protagonist making bad choices after bad choices until page 190. The book really picks up from there and it redeems itself in the second half. Although, there are certain things that will make you quite uncomfortable, to be honest. There are few likable characters in the story. Overall, it was a fun one-time read. I rated it a 3.5/5.

2)Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey

This book has been on my reading list for a while and it’s been a minute since I read a Tessa Bailey book. So, here we are. As always, I expected a steamy romance with some adorable characters and the book didn’t disappoint. This was a fun read, and I enjoyed it for the most part. The chemistry between the main characters was on point. Secretly Yours is an opposites attract kind of love story and both the characters try to find a balance by the end. If you are looking for a fun one-time romance with some steam, this is a good pick. I rated it a 3.5/5.

3) The Other Mrs by Mary Kubica

My sister lend me The Other Mrs and I wouldn’t have read this if not for her. The Other Mrs is basically a suburban thriller that takes place in Maine. The book is told from three different perspectives. A murder happens in the neighborhood and the plot is the events that happen during the time. How the protagonist gets tangled up in this mess is basically our story. I couldn’t guess where the story was going. I am usually not a fan of the unreliable narrator, but here, it is used quite cleverly. It reminded me of an old Tamil movie which is set up in a similar premise. Overall, I enjoyed this book and rated it a 4/5. ( Review available soon.)

4) The Rachel Incident by Caroline O’Donoghue

This one was a NetGalley e-ARC which I picked randomly. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. After my disappointment with the tale of friendship in Bunny, this one was exactly what I expected to get from the former. A lifelong whirlwind of a friendship that isn’t always healthy and yet there is love. The story is about Rachel recalling different phases of their lives and how they became the people they are today.  I would recommend this book to everyone who loves that kind of a whirlwind story with relatable aspects. I enjoyed it a lot and rated it a 5/5.( Review )

5) The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston

If you are a regular here, you would know how much I loved The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to read her next book. The author mentions in the acknowledgments that this book is close to her heart and it shows. More than the romance, it is about how Clementine, the main character, accepts her grief and comes to terms with it. A theme that we also witness in The Dead Romantics. However, here it is more prominent, but in a beautiful way. The romance leaves you wanting for more. I loved this one and rated it a 5/5.

This book can be triggering to some people. So, I would recommend you check the trigger warnings.  It is not for everyone but for me personally, the book felt quite relatable and the I enjoyed being lost among the characters who are trying to evolve with time and becoming more sure of who they are while finding love.
