His and Hers | By Alice Feeney
Book review | Mystery Thriller

My thoughts
Narrative and Plot
As the title suggests, the story unfolds through his point of view and hers, with the killer’s perspective thrown into the mix as well. The audiobook especially stands out here, with a distorted, morphed voice narrating the killer’s chapters, which genuinely adds to the tension. If you’re picking this up, I’d say the audiobook is the best way to experience it.
His and Hers is a small-town murder mystery thriller centered around Anna Andrews, her ex-husband Jack, and the dark past they share. The story is well-paced and atmospheric, creating a constant sense of urgency as a killer remains on the loose.
Characters and Conflicts
Anna is a complicated protagonist and an unreliable narrator. While this wasn’t my favorite execution of the unreliable narrator trope, it still does its job – keeping us intrigued and pushing us to question how much of Anna’s version of events we can trust, and how the present-day murders connect to the past.
Jack and Anna, with their shared history and buried secrets, form a twisted and toxic duo. As the story progresses, it becomes easier to predict the general direction it’s heading in. However, the final plot twist comes completely out of left field. While the intention is clearly to shock the reader, it ends up feeling less like a clever reveal and more like an unnecessary betrayal.
Conclusion
Overall, His and Hers was a solid one-time read for me. It’s engaging and entertaining, but it doesn’t quite deliver when it comes to weaving a deeply tangled or satisfying mystery. Enjoyable while it lasts, but not particularly memorable once it’s over.
