Mystery in the Metaverse
Chief technical officer of Emergence A.I., Damien Zili has gone missing. He was last seen conducting a ceremony inside the metaverse. All that remains of him now is a trail of blood and intrigue throughout his all-glass mansion in the hills above Silicon Valley. FBI Special Agent Asher Bloom arrives at the scene to find an elaborate puzzle sprawled throughout the bizarre mansion and inside a futuristic reality simulator, accessible by Damien’s high-tech VR room known as the “Metaverse Theater.” While Agent Bloom investigates these ominous surroundings he discovers someone is targeting a “cult” nearing their goal of creating the world’s first sentient “A.I. God.” Jumping in and out of many worlds, real and imaginary, Agent Bloom is thrust into a high stakes game to save humanity. (Goodreads)

Narrative and Plot

Mystery in the Metaverse is a great concept full of potential. It’s one of the things that drew me to the book. It is a sci-fi mystery thriller set in the near future, when we are on the brink of singularity. How things unfold when power rests in the hands of eccentric tech billionaires sums up the plot of the book.

The story is told from the perspective of the protagonist, Asher Bloom. It is fast-paced and filled with futuristic adventures, virtual worlds, and high-concept theories. However, for all the bravado, philosophy, and mystery, it had very little heart. If you are not invested in the fate of the characters, there isn’t much point to a thriller with a race against time.

Characters and Conflicts

Asher Bloom is the central character in the story. While he fits the bill of a detective novel cliche, the workaholic officer, estranged from family, with a penchant for doing the right thing, there is little we are shown about him. Most of the events take precedence since there is a time limit, but there’s still space to dig deeper than the surface when it comes to the main characters.

The same goes for the eccentric billionaires. We only know about them through Asher or the profile briefings he receives. None of it is enough to make us truly invested in any of the characters. The ensemble cast, including Jade, felt two-dimensional, serving mainly as plot devices.

The conflict and overall plot are quite strong. That’s what makes the story intriguing until the end. However, while the resolution is great in terms of concept, the execution didn’t quite land.

Conclusion

Mystery in the Metaverse is a fun one-time read, as far as I’m concerned. There is intrigue, worldbuilding, and sci-fi elements blended into a cocktail that definitely gets your attention.
