If I could have a fiddle made of Daddy’s bones, I’d play it. I’d learn all the secrets he kept. Shady Grove inherited her father’s ability to call ghosts from the grave with his fiddle, but she also knows the fiddle’s tunes bring nothing but trouble and darkness. My thoughts

Narrative and Plot
Ghost Wood Song is told from the main character Shady’s perpespective. Shady is a teenager who iss struggling with the grief of her father and the melancholy is a constant presence throughout the story. The forelon longing of an aching heart really comes through the story. It reflects in the songs as well. Personally, I haven’t known Blue grass music before this book.. That’s one of the things I love about reading. How it introduces you to new things. The book has a strong musical presence.

The plot however is not exactly a strong suit. The pacing was all good but the big reveal didn’t exactly move me as a reader. And the conflict after the conflict technique felt a bit lagging towards the ending. Perhaps it is my own unfamiliarity with the culture and music. But, apart from the beautiful musical environment in the end, things didn’t exactly move me as a reader.

Characters and Conflicts

Shady is a complex and layered protagonist.The book is about her finding her voice and place in the world. And it successfully develops an arc for her. The romance and the love triangle was not that charming. But it went well with the whole story.

The book has an ensemble of great characters. But a lot of them were left a bit unexplored. Shady’s mother being one of them. Jess is another important character in the story who got pushed away amidst Shady’s romance. However, that being said the love triangle and the conflict between the characters was explored well. Only problem I felt is, it could have taken a backseat when the stakes were too high.

Conclusion

 

Overall, Ghostwood song is your perfect one time October read. It has melancholy and paranormal aspects along with a musical atmospheric theme. If you enjoy all these things, give this book a chance.
