My thoughts
Narrative and Plot
If you’ve read my previous reviews you know that I am a fan of books with out of the box narratives. But sometimes just a simple third person narrative can do the job if you do it the right way. The Kiss Quotient had an impressive and very imaginative voice. One that kept you hooked right from the beginning to the end.
Just when you think this is just another romance read with hot steamy scenes, the book surprises you by showing depth and drawing you into the story. The strong plot and well developed characters are just the incentives you need to get going into a passionate romance like this.
Characters and Conflicts
You’re dealing with two main characters – Stella and Michael. Stella is an autistic thirty year old woman who believes that she can get better in relationships by practicing and hires an escort. Michael is an escort forced into the profession by his situations. With this interesting premise, you clearly begin with characters who have issues and can’t wait to see their arcs.
At first the whole conflict surrounds around Stella and her issues because of the label she has. You would think of Michael as this perfect romantic lead. But as the story progresses it points out an important fact. Labels or not, every person has issues of their own created by their own insecurities. This is important because often the ones who look completely perfect to the outside world, judged by the norms of the society, are completely vulnerable and broken inside.
Recently we had some celebrities in India who were considered fairly successful and talented and rightly so. Only, they were brave enough to admit that beneath the glitz and glamour they were just like any other person struggling to deal with themselves and were depressed. The point is despite being a steamy love story, it touches an important topic – mental health. Both kinds, one labeled and the other unlabelled.
The book showcases a diverse culture and a wide range of characters even though they spend a very little time in the story. Not that you can complain, Stella and Michael are entertaining enough.
The only thing I could pick out was by the end, it almost had a fairy tale ending. It’s not a bad thing. However not all problems go away with the blink of an eye.
Conclusion
Overall, this is an enjoyable read for any romance fan. The book has a lot of hot and steamy sex scenes and if you are uncomfortable reading content like that, this might not be your cup of tea. However if you can take it along with the stride, strap in for a steamy, passionate and touching romantic read.
