The Soulmate Equation | By Christina Lauren

My thoughts
Narrative and Plot
The Soulmate Equation is a unique blend of sci-fi and romance. I say sci-fi because the science part of the story is prominent, and the plot depends heavily on it. If you aren’t familiar with a bell curve or don’t know what an asymptotic curve looks like, a lot of the science mentioned won’t make sense to you.
That being said, apart from the science, we have a lovable yet flawed protagonist, Jess, along with a vibrant best friend, Fizzy, and the mysterious male lead, Americano. The story is told from Jess’s perspective.
The plot takes its time to develop, but when it gets there, it’s worth the wait. It is a constant push and pull of science vs. choice.
Characters and Conflicts
Jess and River are both compelling characters, and it’s easy to root for them. Their chemistry is evident right from the first scene, but it never becomes an insta-love story. The story takes its time to develop these characters and gradually sheds the barriers, making us root for them even more, page after page.
The ensemble cast does a fantastic job of complementing them. Jess and Juno’s relationship is heartwarming and adorable — you can never get enough of it. Despite this, the final conflict is a serious one that flips the script upside down. I wish they had spent more time resolving it rather than brushing it off as a minor inconvenience.
Even so, in the end, it was a beautiful romance with a re-readable quality to it.
Conclusion
The Soulmate Equation is a breath of fresh air in the world of romance, and yet it hits many familiar tropes and beats of the genre. It’s genetics and chemistry mixed in a cocktail that will leave you wanting more.
