The Player Next Door | BY K A Tucker

My thoughts
Narrative and Plot
The Player Next Door is a second-chance romance told from the protagonist Scarlet’s perspective. Since the story revolves around the characters’ history during high school, it reads more like YA for the most part. While the story does come together in the last quarter, much of it focuses on the familiar “mean girl and popular guy” high school trope.
The pacing was even, with a lot of spice peppered throughout. There could have been a few chapters from Shane’s point of view, but we’re left wanting more.
Characters and Conflicts
Scarlet is our main character, and the story centers on how she finds her place and romance after relocating to her toxic high school hometown. Despite being an adult, Scarlet reads more like a teenage girl, especially with her huge crush on the neighbor next door and her lingering pain from high school.
Shane is your typical small-town romance hero. However, both their relationships with Cody add depth and give the characters layers. There could have been more character development beyond just what happened in high school.
The ensemble cast definitely adds to the drama of the story, and I’m really looking forward to reading the sequel about Justine.
Conclusion
Overall, The Player Next Door is a one-time small-town romance read. If you’re looking for something light and smutty, give this one a try.
