The Housemaid | BY Freida McFadden

Book Review | Mystery Thriller

The Housemaid
Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband. I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of…       ( Goodreads)

Narrative and Plot

The majority of the book is told from our protagonist Millie’s perspective. We see the Winchester house through her eyes and get pulled into this world.

This is a fast-paced story. Were it a Netflix series, this would be one of those limited series you could finish over a weekend. While I don’t want to divulge too much of the plot, it’s best to go into this one blind.

Characters and Conflicts

Millie, Nina, and Andy are the three central characters. The events of the story upend all their lives in irreversible ways. Even though I had an idea where the story was heading, I still wanted to keep going. The writing is definitely entertaining.

About the twist, right from the beginning, I suspected how things would play out. It was so obvious that I kept second-guessing myself. This might be a mild spoiler for both this book and the one I’m about to compare it to, so fair warning. I was reminded of The Wife Between Us. Maybe because I read it in March, and this is the next thriller I picked up. But the central conflict in both books is quite similar.

That being said, The Housemaid is more dramatic and clearly set up for a sequel. I’m definitely curious to read it.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, entertaining thriller, The Housemaid is a good pick. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s gripping and keeps you curious. One of my favourite BookTubers aptly described it as a “popcorn thriller,” and I completely agree. If that’s something you enjoy, give it a go.
