Narrative and Plot
The narrative is one of the strongest aspects of the book. It builds momentum and tension right from the start. The audiobook even has the sound effects during the opening run, right up until she realizes that the locks have been changed.
There are multiple points of view, and somehow, they all create this sense of urgency that keeps pushing the story forward. This, in turn, makes you keep turning the pages because you want to find out more.
The pacing was even, and it felt like the book was focusing more on shock value with each chapter.
Characters and Conflicts
My Husband’s Wife is full of flawed characters, some more than others. The question is, what kind of transgressions are you willing to forgive? Or, simply put, which is the lesser evil?
This was more of a plot oriented story than a character oriented one. Yet, whatever character arc we got was enough to keep us interested in the story.
As the story progresses, it makes you think that you have a handle on what is happening. But nothing is as it seems. However, towards the latter half, almost every chapter had a reveal that you never saw coming.
Now, I believe this is not a plot that you need to take too seriously. You don’t have to think too deeply. Just enjoy the twists and turns as you go.
But if you are in the habit of looking too closely, I am sure there are plenty of plot holes as the story unravels.
Conclusion
Overall, My Husband’s Wife was a quick read. It can be classified as a fun popcorn thriller that carries the eerie, mysterious nature of an Agatha Christie novel, which I think is becoming something of a signature style for Alice Feeney by now.
