A young woman tries to heal her heartbreak by casting a spell to erase her ex from her past, but she wakes up in an alternate reality where she’s lost more than she wished for in this witty, whimsical friends-to-lovers debut. What if one little wish changed everything? When Gemma gets dumped by her long-term boyfriend, she reacts the way any reasonable twenty-eight-year-old would: by getting drunk with her sister, kooky aunt, and best friend, Dax. After one too many margaritas, they decide to perform a love- cleansing spell, which promises to erase Gemma’s ex from her memory. They follow all the instructions, including a platonic kiss from Dax to seal the deal. When Gemma wakes up, she realizes that this silly spell has worked. Not only does it seem that she never dated her ex, but the rest of her life is completely unrecognizable. The worst part: Dax has no idea who she is. To reverse the spell and get back to her old life, Gemma must convince her once-best-friend-now-near-stranger to kiss her. But as she carries out her plans, she finds herself falling for him—hard. Soon, Gemma begins to wonder whether she even wants to go back to the way things once were. What if Dax was The One all along?   (Goodreads)

Narrative and Plot

This Spells Love is a contemporary romance with a hint of magic—or so I’d say. We follow Gemma, who wants to change her past after a terrible breakup but ends up waking up in an alternate reality where her life is entirely different. However, this also means she never met her best friend, Dax.

Gemma’s parallel realities and her efforts to get Dax to kiss her—so she can return to her own reality—form the core of the plot. It was an entertaining and fun read.

Characters and Conflicts

There is an inherent theme in the story: we are who we are because of our experiences, both good and bad. This is how both Gemma and Dax’s character arcs have been developed. Gemma has the courage and spirit to be more open to things without a bad relationship weighing her down. But those are also the experiences that shaped her as a person.

As she struggles with this dichotomy and sees the possibilities in her own reality, she learns to appreciate them more and strives to be a better person nonetheless.

That, right there, is a beautiful character arc. However, we do not get much from Dax’s perspective, and there were moments where I wished we could have seen his point of view as well. The ensemble cast, which includes Gemma’s aunt and sister, brought more life and colour to the story.

Refreshingly, this one had a strong third-act conflict. It could have been even better with Dax’s point of view, but it was still satisfying enough for a romance.

Conclusion

Overall, This Spells Love is a cozy, feel-good romantic comedy. It reminds us that life is full of possibilities and roads not taken, but there is meaning in the path we choose—if we are brave enough to embrace it.
