Hex Appeal
Essie Winterscale lives in a huge and ever-changing house in the village of Good Winter, in deepest, darkest Essex. She lives with various witches of various ages, one of whom is still a bit salty about being hanged in the 1700s, one who keeps accidentally casting fertility spells, and one who knits things that create the future. All Essie ever wanted was to have a normal life but in the end she found herself drawn back to Beldam House because she just can’t stop her witchiness (although the ability to instantly chill wine is pretty awesome, even she has to admit). Into this coven of chaos stumbles gorgeous, clueless Josh, their new landlord – and he’s just discovered his tenants haven’t paid rent since the 1700s! As Josh is drawn further into the lives of the inhabitants of Beldam House, Essie is determined to keep him at broomstick’s length. That is, until a family secret, lying hidden for centuries, puts Josh firmly under her spell…       (GoodReads)

Narrative and Plot

I picked this one out on a whim, and boy, was that the best decision! Hex Appeal is a witchy read that puts you right in the middle of the chaotic and atmospheric mood you wish to have in October.

The plot is quite strong and well-paced. There is a lot going on, but it all makes sense in the end.

Characters and Conflicts

Hex Appeal is filled with colorful characters. Every single one of them stands out, and you feel happy to be a fly on the wall, observing the many different things happening in most scenes. Essie and Josh are our quirky main characters. They’re awkward and bumpy, but together they fit like the perfect pieces of a puzzle.

There is a lot going on in the story, but the romance and the idea of love in general are the central themes. Once you get to know the main characters, you can’t help but root for them. The family, the pets, and the house all add to the charm.

Conclusion

Overall, Hex Appeal is an entertaining, fast-paced witchy read if you’re not looking for something serious. It has a few somber moments, but other than that, it is mostly a feel-good spooky read. It’s the kind of supernatural/paranormal story that scaredy-cats like me can enjoy in the fall.
