How To Kill a Guy in Ten Dates
When Jamie Prescott and her best friend Laurie attend a speed-dating event, Jamie expects to meet a roster of mediocre men and indulge in some street food afterwards. She doesn’t expect one of her dates to have his throat slit at their table during a blackout. After the lights come back on and there are more bodies on the floor, it becomes clear that dating can be a very dangerous pastime. Armed with makeshift weapons and Jamie’s extensive knowledge of what NOT to do in a slasher, the remaining speed daters try to find an exit while the killer adds to their body count. As the night progresses and Jamie comes face-to-mask with the murderer, she begins to suspect they are committing the slayings to woo one of the daters and turn them into a real-life Final Girl. But Jamie has other plans, and as she fights for her life, she can’t help but find herself ensconced in a love triangle with two of the other survivors. Will she make it through the bloodshed to find her Happily Ever After? Or does this machete-wielding psychopath have another ending in mind? (Goodreads)

My thoughts

Narrative and Plot

I went into this book with high expectations because of all the positive reviews, and it did not disappoint. I listened to the audiobook, which features an elaborate production complete with sound effects. I would highly recommend experiencing this story in audiobook format.

The story is told from our main character Jamie’s, point of view. Her love for slashers and rom-com unexpectedly becomes a survival guide when a killer is loose at a dating event.

Characters and Conflicts

Even though this is a single perspective narrative, there are plenty of memorable characters. Each of them feels distinct and has a clear role to play in the story.

The chemistry between the main leads is crafted in a way that leaves you rooting for them while also making you question your own assumptions. It pulls you deeper into Jamie’s journey and makes you feel invested in the outcome.

There is a fair amount of gore in this book, so be sure to check the trigger warnings before diving in. The parallels it draws between rom-coms and slashers are surprisingly accurate and add an extra layer of fun to the story. While there is significant character development throughout, the external plot never lets your attention wander.

The twist at the end is fairly predictable, although that may very well be intentional. After all, you don’t pick a slasher or a rom-com solely for the shocking twist.

Conclusion

Overall, How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates was an engaging thriller, especially in audiobook format. It stays true to its genre while delivering plenty of entertainment, making it a great pick for fans of both slashers and rom-coms.
